Walking in Light: The Everyday Empowerment of a Shamanic Life, by Sandra Ingerman

Review

“In her wonderful new book, Sandra Ingerman, one of the great shamanic teachers of our time, offers us ways to become shamans of our own souls and healers of our own lives. She incites us to come to our senses in the animated, spirited universe. Open this book on almost any page, and you will find a door to the Otherworld. Walking in Light stirs us to wake up inside the dream of this life, and change the dream if it does not suit our soul’s purpose. This book is highly recommended for both neophytes and advanced practitioners. It calls us to make and live our own creation stories and walk in tenderness and joy on this good earth as stars who came down because we wanted a juicier life.” —Robert Moss, author of Conscious Dreaming, Dreaming the Soul Back Home,  and The Boy Who Died and Came Back   “It’s your birthright to live an inspired and purposeful life—illuminated by the radiance of your soul. In these pages, Sandra Ingerman lovingly guides you into the profound, ongoing ceremony that is shamanic living. Allow her to inspire you to transform the mundane into the sacred and open your heart to the enduring beauty that unites all that is. The journey to awaken the marvelous change-maker you were born to be starts now!” —Evelyn C. Rysdyk, author of Spirit Walking: A Course in Shamanic Power and A Spirit Walker’s Guide to Shamanic Tools   “The practices, journeys, and insights in Walking in Light offer a step-by-step guide that will help you refine your soul’s journey, deepen your relationship with spirit and nature, and consciously participate with the creative force of life. Sandra shares brilliantly, in a down-to-earth and detailed manner, how we can nurture our heartfelt longings and support positive planetary change during these evolving times. This is a master guidebook!” —Llyn Roberts, MA, award-winning author of Shapeshifting into Higher Consciousness and Shamanic Reiki(with Robert Levy)   “In Walking in Light,  Sandra Ingerman, calling herself a spiritual explorer, leads us to explore our own inner worlds to seek our spiritual identities. From her own life experiences and shamanic practice, she tells us she has ‘fine-tuned’ her work and teaching as she continues to share the solid advice and instruction that her students have come to expect. Her message to all of us, whether seasoned shamanic practitioners or newcomers, is to fine-tune our own spiritual paths, to not put our shamanic practice ‘in a box,’ but to experiment in order to keep it alive, relevant, and vital.” —Tom Cowan, author of Fire in the Head, Shamanism As a Spiritual Practice for Daily Life and Yearning for the Wind   “Once again Sandra Ingerman has written a superb, highly practical, and comprehensive book about practicing the shamanic way of life—and the best part of all, with simplicity and kindness. Here Sandra demonstrates the wisdom gained from many years of dedicated hard work walking her own sometimes very challenging shamanic path. What I most appreciated is that throughout the book she takes a non-rigid, flexible approach, emphasizing creativity and living from the heart. It is as if she is taking you by the hand and guiding you personally through each step and consideration in the process. If there were ever an excellent basic manual to shamanic practice, this would be it.” —José Luis Stevens, PhD, author of Awaken the Inner Shaman, The Power Path,  and Secrets of Shamanism.   “Sandra Ingerman is a modern medicine woman whose book Walking in Light has brought together more than 30 years of her teaching and practice in an ancient yet curiously immediate spiritual tradition called shamanism. Among the indigenous peoples, it was always understood that each new generation had the responsibility to perpetuate and refresh a continuously recreated body of wisdom and technique, even adding to and changing the accumulating treasure of the shamanic tradition across time . . . for it was always in this way that it remained vital and meaningful to those who walked the shaman’s path. Sandra Ingerman has done just this, and she is to be commended for creating very good medicine indeed. I love this book!” —Hank Wesselman, PhD, anthropologist and author of eight books on shamanism including The Bowl of Light,  the award-winning Awakening to the Spirit World (with Sandra Ingerman), and the Spiritwalker trilogy   “Walking in Light by Sandra Ingerman is more than just a deeper understanding of the work of a shaman. It’s an everyday guide to help you tap into your inner wisdom, integrate the shamanic practices, and activate the power of love within. This book will not only help beginners of the shamanic way but also people who have been working with these practices for a while." —Gary Quinn, intuitive life coach and bestselling author of May the Angels Be With You and The Yes Frequency   “Awaken with Sandra Ingerman’s new book and walk into the light of your destiny. Sandra will take you by the hand and help reveal your inner self in order to find and achieve your true call and vision for the future. See how following the shamanic life leads you to a sense of inner peace, and triggers the creation of your mind to put into action all of these deep thoughts buried within. We all need to become Peace in Action in order to complete the sentence ‘I think, therefore I am’ with ‘therefore I do!’ It’s in the doing that our being finds the true meaning of its existence. Walking in Light will indeed empower you and reveal the path to your inner and outer world.”  —Emmanuel Itier, director/producer of the award-winning documentary Femme and CEO of Wonderland Entertainment

This has been very helpful to me. I'm sure there is excellent psychology behind the exercises. It is very positive throughout. Any examples of negative human traits are brief and to the point, to explain why and how we can change. There is enough material here, and enough exercises, to keep a person busy growing and connecting for a very long time.I am nearly to the end of the book, even though I have been careful to read only small bits at a time. I like to give myself time to process each bit, to get maximum effect. The book is easy enough to read that I could have finished it quickly, and still gained much, but I wanted to feel it on a deeper level. I know I will be going back through it many times, as these exercises can be helpful done many times, and besides, I can't possibly remember everything.I wasn't sure I would like this book. If memory serves, that doubt lingered into the very first of the book. I was pleasantly surprised, even amazed at how perfect this book is for what I need at this time. So many great ways to connect with our spiritual self, and the spiritual world.

This is a must read for anyone who works in the social services and caring professions. I recommend it as a way to be more effective as a caregiver while at the same time learning how to share and support people with social and emotional needs and maintaining one's energy reserves for the self and family/friends. I'm not an expert, though I found this a professionally useful read. I recommend it!

I loved this book as it fulfilled my requirements for enjoyment and knowledge. I was searching for a body of knowledge that encompasses positive ways to help and enlighten both my self and perhaps others. she was clear in her presentation informative and gave lots customizable exercises to deepen our experience. I would recommend this book to all that need to feel empowered to love the earth and the manic of humanity. In sometimes a challenging times she provides a beautiful light.

Walking In Light was a gorgeous surprise. I was prepared for the usual type of self-help book, however was pleasantly surprised to find the book and its contents were deeply rooted in reality, every day living and how to level-up in many ways.

Very useful to give ideas about different types of journeys and when to use them for healing, self-exploration, to work with different helpers.

This is a revealing look at the healing energies we have within. Sandra makes learning how to use meditation or shamanic practice to amplify and utilize our very own inner light within an easy task,, With that knowledge we become able to look at both ourselves and others in a different way, a positive one. As we continue to read and learn, and then take action, our inner light brightens to dim negative thoughts and memories .JB

Sandra has done a nice job of explicitly describing ways to connect to the universe, with a nice balance of theoretical background. This is a very user friendly guide to developing more of a connection yourself.

Powerful suggestions and clearcut exercises for both the beginning practitioner as well as those who have been on their journey to enhance their daily practice

Good stuff for a great system, but not as good as others in the Weird Wars line.

Created in 2013 after a successful kickstarter campaign , Weird Wars: Rome is a slender, strangely sized booklet - it sticks out on the shelf - that's short on page count but chock-full of good stuff. The premise is classic: the horrors of war are real and are feeding on violence and misery, so that supernatural creatures and monsters become very real... in ancient Rome. The basic handbook provides all that we expect from a Savage Worlds setting - characters, new setting rules, a good, quick but solid overview of the gaming world.Just add the SW handbook.A number of military campaigns is outlined in the handbook - ready to play.* the Second Punic War* the Third Macedonian War* the Fall of Carthage* the De Bello Gallico* the Invasion of Britain* the Boudicca Rebellion* the Jewish Rebellion* the Germanic WarsLike other titles in the Weird Wars line (such as **Weird War II**), the game is geared towards miniature tactical action. In this sense, we can imagine scenarios in which our Roman Legionaries will first discover and investigate the horror, and than take it on in combat, on the field. Now, I'm not so hot about using miniatures - after all, I've played Savage Worlds in a car, on the road, and in a number of other situations in which there was barely room for the dice - but Weird Wars: Rome is clearly one of the settings that really shines when the miniatures are on the table.Another great feature of Weird Wars: Rome is the *Legatum* mechanics - a simple system that, while deepening the setting and making characters more connected with it, allows the keeper to run a multi-generational campaign, running through the whole of Roman history, from the Republic to the twilight of the Empire. This is a fascinating opportunity, and it is very much in line with the Roman mindset, with the centrality of family and ancestry. With the Legatum, sons may fight the enemies of their fathers. The artwork is very fine, and there's a wealth of extras and accessories out there - handbooks, maps, paper miniatures, the works. All in all, an excellent addition to my collection.

Although not new to the roleplaying scene (25+ years as either a game-master or player), I am a recent convert to the Savage Worlds rule-set. I’ve tried most systems over my two plus decades of gaming at the table and this particular one works incredibly well, especially for those of us with busy work and family schedules (i.e. not enough time to plan/prep campaigns). As a result of my enthusiasm for Savage Worlds, I own the Deluxe core rules, the Fantasy Companion, The Horror Companion, as well as the Beasts and Barbarians supplements from GRAMEL. I recently took a bit of a chance on the Weird Wars Rome (WWR) supplement and am coming out of this purchase with mixed feelings. As indicated already, the book’s size is non-standard compared to the core line, which means it completely sticks out of the lot. Not a huge deal but worth noting nonetheless. The artwork is decent, although a bit too ‘graphic novel’ like for my taste. But then again, this is in line with the art found in other Savage Worlds supplements. Chalk it up to the ‘pulp’ feel of the rule-set.My biggest disappointment is with the level of content, which is most definitely on the short side. The historical background was nicely written, although one could argue it pales in comparison to what can be freely extracted from even a cursory search on Google. The use of ‘latin’ words to describe equipment, military ranks, and army structure is of course a nice touch (expected, actually) but this is more of an ‘introduction’ to what could have been a grand book on the Roman Empire. We are talking about a roughly 500-year period of history (not counting the Byzantine era); there’s plenty of material to draw from there. Where are the detailed rules on political intrigue? What about mass combat (using tactics specific to the Roman army), with stat blocks for opposing armies (Carthage, Macedonia, Germania, Gaul, etc…)? What about a section on religion, which I was expecting given the angle this book takes?I buy these supplements for mostly one reason: I am too busy to sit down for hours to concoct campaigns, NPCs, monsters, or artifacts. I buy supplements to first and foremost provide me with 1) stat blocks for everything from objects to baddies, 2) adventure/campaign ideas, and 3) setting flavor. The introductory campaigns are interesting, but again, the content is simply too light. The broad strokes are sketched out but you are really left to fill in the gaps; and a lot of gaps there are (especially for the Legacy plot point campaign). On the whole, and as indicated already, I think this book is a missed opportunity to explore a defining time in history and translate that over to the fantastic Savage Worlds system. My bottom-line assessment is that out of all the supplements I currently own for the Savage World rule-set, I would rate this one as the most disappointing (I’m sorry to say).

Bad Rabbi: And Other Strange but True Stories from the Yiddish Press (Stanford Studies in Jewish History and Culture)

Review

"Bad Rabbi is a masterful set of finely-tuned scholarship and critical zingers that brings detailed archival history of 'downwardly mobile' nineteenth- and twentieth-century Jews alive through vivid, erudite, and spit-take funny storytelling. Portnoy heads straight for the urban immigrant underbelly, opens up the newspapers, and uses portraits of a vanished people and a vanished culture to not just deliver a bygone way of life, but to explode some of our most dominant conceptions of modern Jewish culture." (Josh Kun author of Audiotopia: Music, Race and America)"Don't feel guilty chuckling your way through Bad Rabbi as you read about the crazy deeds and commonplace misfortunes of marginal Jews from a century ago. " (Renee Ghert-Zand The Times of Israel)"This fascinating book contains the strangest Jews I've ever met in my life. It should appeal to every history buff out there―Jewish, gentile or otherwise. What's Yiddish for 'Buy this book, or may all your teeth fall out except one to give you a toothache'?" (A.J. Jacobs author of The Year of Living Biblically: One Man's Humble Quest to Follow the Bible as Literally as Possible)"Only a historian with the wit and comic sensibility of Eddy Portnoy could succeed in resurrecting these dead and forgotten Jews of New York and Warsaw. Through his painstaking research, we can vicariously experience their desperation and lack of self-control, their strange passions and their various forms of mental illness – predicaments we're just one step away from ourselves." (Ben Katchor comic artist and creator of Julius Knipl: Real Estate Photographer)"In the staid world of academic Yiddishists, Eddy Portnoy is a live wire, a funny guy, a mischief-maker, what they used to call in the Catskills, a tummler...Bad Rabbi is a succession of outlandish misadventures, a wild panorama populated by an astonishing array of characters... Yiddish journalists were showboats, garnishing tabloid sensationalism with literary jokes and religious references. (Given this high-low style, as well as its caustic attitudinizing and internal feuds, the Yiddish press seems like a flamboyant forerunner to the old Village Voice.) Such zesty informality carries over into Portnoy's own writing, which, in blending the erudite and vernacular, regularly tilts toward the latter." (J. Hoberman New York Times )"While Bad Rabbi is a decidedly a work of scholarship, it is also―and fittingly―a surprising and sometimes shocking glimpse of the mishegoss that was eagerly reported in the Yiddish press....[A] book that took chutzpah to write but is a sheer pleasure to read." (Jonathan Kirsch Jewish Journal)"Endlessly interesting and entertaining with stories that range from the macabre to the hilarious." (Southern Jewish Life Magazine)"The 'two-bit nobodies' to whom Portnoy―a wickedly sparkling writer, by the way―dedicates Bad Rabbi include out-and-out criminals, crazies, eccentrics, hopeless dreamers and aspirant intellectuals. But they all share one thing―failure. Lobbes-dom is a wonderfully rich seam to mine, and mine it Portnoy does, using as excavating tools the unrestrained journalism of ancient file copies of Yiddish newspapers published in Warsaw and New York. I was enchanted by his accounts....Portnoy is a genius at putting the sting at the end of every chapter." (Jonathan Margolis The Jewish Chronicle)"...Portnoy's rollicking chronicle of Jewish newspaper scandal is an entertaining plunge into unexamined corners of the Jewish past. It is a necessary intervention into Jewish historiography, reorienting the historian's gaze to segments of the newspaper, and of history, that tend to get overlooked in the search for items significant to global politics and literary history. It is also an exemplar of scholarship aimed at lay audiences, with titillating and fast-paced storytelling that nevertheless offers historical depth and grounding." (Jessica Kirzane H-Judaic)"Exuberantly vulgar, blithely unconcerned with gentile opinion, these nuggets of low-class Yiddishism won't let us forget how rough-and-tumble life in Yiddishland really was." (Michael Wex author of Born to Kvetch: Yiddish Language and Culture in All of Its Moods)

Many American Jews would like you to associate the word "Jew" with the likes of Albert Einstein or Jonas Salk, as they themselves do. But not all Jews are geniuses or benefactors of mankind. Like every ethnic group, Jewry has always had its share of lowlives, sleazeballs, weirdos and raving lunatics--but their stories would be lost to history were it not for being preserved in the almost-never-read archives of the late Yiddish press. (Who's to read old Yiddish newspapers any more? Only Eddy Portnoy.) Whenever a Jewish sleaze did make the news, my older relatives would squirm; their criterion for judgment about everything was first and foremost "Is it good for the Jews?" (My father used to say of Roy Cohn, "That's the kind of Jew that anti-Semites can love.") The only reason these histories were preserved was that anti-Semites could not read them and thus could not exploit them. Still, a fair number of them comport with popular anti-Semitic stereotypes, suggesting that the bigots had at least second-hand if not direct experience with the sordid underbelly of Jewish society. The stories are fascinating, sometimes hilarious, but one still fears they will play into the hands of bigots even if the squalid, teeming slums of the Lower East Side and of Warsaw, the incubators of all that, are long gone. One reads of riots spawned by ludicrous rumors about doctors and public health, and one thinks of the systematic murder of vaccination teams and the spreading of wild rumors by Islamic extremists today. Same story, different protagonists! (There is something touching about the saga of Urke Nachlnik, a career criminal who became a litterateur and journalist and ended up an anti-Nazi guerrilla martyr. Think about that trajectory.)

Sounded better from the reviews than it turned out to be. The text was repetitious and the stories were not that interesting. Still, it's one of the few books available to give you a perspective on the yiddish press.I'm sure the material is out there for a better book than this. Let's hope someone writes one!

The introductory material alone is well worth the price of this book. Mr. Portnoy gives us a much-needed perspective to understand the time and place when this material was created. In my parents' and grandparents' generations, they were adamant about condemning anything in print that dared to show our people as anything but good, the mentshes of our people. I often argued, "C'mon, there is no one group of people that is either all good or all bad." They would agree, of course, but were terrified of even more oppression of our people if anyone could see anything truly negative. I think that even they would like this book. The bizarre material (which reads like a comic book) researched and collected from actual printed news articles of past eras is framed in a loving, sympathetic, yet utterly humorous context. Thank you, Mr. Portnoy, for making me laugh. Knowing that this stuff really happened could have been horrifying -- but because of how it was presented, it gave me joy and gratitude for our present time, which is hopefully not like that!!! (OK, maybe it is somewhere, but like I said, I was/am sheltered LOL). Fascinating read. You won't find anything like this elsewhere.

The topic interested me - there is value to showing a more multi-faceted picture of a community than is typically known. One of the values is that when people pine for “the good old days, when everyone was a saint, unlike today ...” we know that there were always good and bad people, and this is true of any group. Some of my gripes have to do with the too-light manner in which some of the serious matters are written about. The line that bothered me the most, and still does, is about a victim of the Holocaust: Reb Dan was shipped off to Treblinka ... “No one ever heard of Reb Dan after that because, quite literally, he went up in smoke.” I found that deeply distasteful. I wish the author would see this so that he’d know how offensive it is. He could have finished the sentence “... because of his tragic end.”

It is difficult to put this down--always wondering what the next chapter will bring. The bios of a range of colorful characters are presented, who you will appreciate are not forgotten by this book. A good picture also of the surrounding culture. That said, the text should have been reviewed by a proofreader for the occasional forgotten word, but no matter--if you are the type that the cover picture and title makes curious, you will enjoy it. Reading before bedtime, you will go to sleep laughing.

Stories bizarre, funny, and poignant. Strange but true only begins to describe this. I love attempting to read the Yiddish newspaper articles from which these stories were gleaned.

New York Times Sunday book review reviewed this book and it sounded interesting so I bought it from Amazon on my e-book. It is sort of interesting but gets tedious after a while.

These rabbis may be bad, but the writing is good. Very good. Thanks to author, Eddy Portnoy, for shining a clear light on a part of Jewish life that had only existed in shadows. Hilarious, poignant, and heartbreaking, I read it in one sitting.
