I read this book back in the 80's and still remember its concepts. One of the ideas that stood out to me is that you don't have to be what you have been told you are or even what you think you are. We have many choices but they have been limited by focusing on one way of being. This usually starts in childhood when parents see us one way and the image grows until we believe that's what we are. The book has some great techniques to get you moving if you feel you're stuck in the same old pattern. The authors speak in a very honest, forthright manner and their words seem to jump from the page. This book gets you in touch with feelings and gets you moving. Highly recommend.

This book is, SO IN YOUR FACE, that if you don't do anything differently after reading it, maybe you should consider that you don't really want to change and that you are content with where you are. I realized that I was overwhelming myself taking leaps instead of hops. A little at a time is all it takes to make progress. I really enjoyed it.

My second "read" by these authors -- and it's just amazing! By NOT beating around the bush, by NOT accepting "poor me" excuses...the advice here about loving oneself and making whatever changes are needed....by TRYING different behaviors....is spot on! I wishevery psychiatrist in the country would read it -- especially the chapter about over-drugging Americans, in general! A valuable book!!

Born to illiterate nomads, Mokeddem herself fought tradition and custom to become the only girl in her village to attend high school; she nurtured herself on the stories told by her Bedouin grandmother, who championed her intelligence and insisted on her education. Through immersion in the literary classics, she distanced herself from her origins, even refusing an arranged marriage. Eventually, she went to medical school and became an expatriate doctor in France. Her heroine Sultana's story, told in this short novel, virtually recapitulates her own. In Sultana, we see a strong yearning for freedom in conflict with the equally powerful sway of the past, and we glimpse the ambivalence as well as the anger of contemporary Algerian women. About the Author
James Reason was Professor of Psychology at the University of Manchester from 1977-2001, from where he graduated in 1962. He obtained his PhD in 1967. From 1964-76, he was Lecturer then Reader in Psychology at the University of Leicester. He has also worked at the RAF Institute of Aviation Medicine, Farnborough, and the US Naval Aerospace Medical Institute, Pensacola. His primary research interest has been the human and organizational contributions to the breakdown of complex, well-defended systems. He has written books on absent-mindedness, human error, aviation human factors, on managing the risks of organizational accidents and, most recently, on error management in maintenance operations. He has researched and consulted in the fields of aviation, railways, nuclear power generation, maritime safety, oil exploration and production, mining, chemical process industry, road safety, banking and health care. He received the Distinguished Foreign Colleague Award from the US Human Factors and Ergonomics Society (1995), the Flight Safety Foundation/Airbus Industrie Award for achievements in human factors and flight safety (2001), and the Roger Green Medal from the Royal Aeronautical Society for contributions to human factors as applied to aerospace (2001), and the Flight Safety Foundation/Boeing Aviation Safety Lifetime Achievement Award (2002) He is a Fellow of the British Academy, the Royal Aeronautical Society and the British Psychological Society. He received an honorary DSc from the University of Aberdeen in 2002, and was awarded a CBE in 2003 for contributions to patient safety. In 2006, he was made an honorary fellow of the Royal College of General Practitioners.

About the Author
Kevin T. Doss, MS, CPP, PSP has over 25 years of experience providing protective services in high-risk environments worldwide. His expertise includes: High-risk protection services and risk, vulnerability and threat assessments, emergency planning, security program development and the application of physical protection systems. Mr. Doss was an instructor for the U.S. Department of Homeland Security Active Shooter Workshop and regularly teaches workplace violence and active shooter courses for many of our nation's top organizations.
He has experience developing infrastructure protection programs, and emergency action and recovery plans for U.S. government agencies and commercial organizations on a global scale. He was part of an expert team that performed a Threat, Vulnerability Risk Assessment of the entire 51-mile Canal Zone in Panama.
Kevin's educational credentials include a Master’s of Science Degree in Security and Risk Management from the University of Leicester, UK, and two ASIS board certifications: Physical Security Professional (PSP) and Certified Protection Professional (CPP).
Mr. Doss is the ASIS International (ASIS) PSP Board Certification Advisor and lead instructor. He is also an adjunct ASIS Certified Protection Professional (CPP) Board Certification Advisor and instructor. He helped to develop the on-line educational series and in-class review programs for both the PSP and CPP board certifications. In addition, Kevin has written and published multiple chapters on security related topics and is the author of the Physical Security Professional (PSP) Study Guide, 2nd Edition.
